A counseling intensive is a one, two or three day experience where you work on specific issues in a concentrated manner. Every intensive is tailored to the needs of the client, and it is designed to promote the greatest amount of work in a short amount of time. Most intensives involve story work, experiential therapy, EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) mindfulness training, and specific strategies/grounding techniques to help with nervous system regulation. Yoga, breath and body work, as well as outdoor activities may also be involved in the process. Intensives take place in a beautiful setting away from the hectic pace of life in order for the client to be present and able to focus on deep healing work. Participating in an intensive offers a huge jumpstart for healing and often lessens the amount of time spent in counseling. It is not necessary to be working with a counselor in order to attend an intensive, but it is highly recommended that the work is continued with an individual therapist after the intensive wraps up.
Counseling is both a science and an art. In graduate school we learn about theories, interventions, modalities…but the art comes into play when sitting across from the client. We must show up with the truest version of ourselves or therapy just won’t ”work.” It is a joy for me to pass along this art to post-graduate counselors working toward licensure as well as licensed counselors who are already working in the field. The connecting nature of sharing ideas and experiences helps us thrive as therapists. We do not do our work in a vacuum…we need each other. I have experienced the gift of sharpening my skills under the supervision and consultation of some amazing and gifted people…and I invite you to join me in this process.
I began supervising interns back in 2010 when working in the counseling center at the YMCA. I later taught an internship class in the counseling department at Vanderbilt University. There I worked with counseling students as they sat with clients for the first time. Currently I supervise both new and seasoned therapists individually, in triads, and in groups.
